Adarsha Kajer Sandhanay (AKAS) is the outcome of the joint effort of a few self-devoted experienced young social workers from varied academic and working disciplines, established in 1999.
AKAS believes that conventional top-down development plans have failed to reach the rural poor. By championing a bottom-up approach ensuring the participation of the lower strata in both planning and execution AKAS works directly with shelter-less rural communities at the lowest socioeconomic levels.
Bangladesh faces high population density, unemployment, low literacy, and deeply skewed distribution of resources. AKAS is constitutionally committed to addressing these impediments in the most vulnerable coastal belt regions.
Women roughly half the population remain economically invisible and socially marginalised. AKAS believes their condition can be improved through participation, health awareness, and education.
